no-name tailgate struts 900

The tailgate struts of our 945 failed in the first cold weather this winter, after nine years of Ottawa/Montreal hot summers and cold winters. These were really toast, one lost all its oil.

I ordered and installed no-name replacements (the only label is in Japanese(?)) and they only lasted two weeks. Now to be fair, it hasn't gone above -18C (0F) here in all that time and there is no fluid leaking, so maybe they will recover with warm weather.

Has anybody else had similar experience? Should I be returning these for my money back, or will they be OK when it warms up here? OTOH, -18C is pretty normal here and they really should work at that temperature, but I would like to know if I need to buy brand-name (Suspa or similar) to get anything like the performance or life of the originals. I want to get rid of the hockey stick handle I'm using now.

Really named Brian
'94 945 that does everything except hold its own tailgate up.

Stabulus is the OEM maker for volvo struts. FCPgroton was selling them at a huge discount from everywhere else I looked.

I have had the FCP Groton struts for only a year and a half. So far so good, summer and winter, well down to 10F. Return the struts you bought.

When they fail, it is usually in cold weather when they can't support the weight of the tailgate. I would return them. I just bought some no-names and it will be interesting to see how they perform.

Brian - I just ordered a set from Groton - Swedish made. Now the tailgate LEAPS up. I think they were $18 apiece. I think totally worth the $$. Good luck.
