Front Seal Carrier Gasket - Dry or With Sealant? 200 1981

81 242: Does the seal carrier for the front crank seal and intermediate shaft seal go back onto the block with a dry gasket? Or is RTV or Hylomar sealant used on this gasket? (A little of the sealant was suggested for the bottom of the carrier where it sits on the oil pan gasket.)

The engine designer intended for the gaskets to be used dry.

I've never gone wrong with a very light coating of RTV -- I like the red "hi temp" stuff.

This is not rocket science. Either approach is likely to work perfectly for you. Sealant is advised when you're reusing a gasket surface, such as the pan gasket.

Another advantage of a light RTV coating is that it does NOT stick well to metal, even though it seals well to metal. When you next remove the housing, the gasket will readily peel away from the metal surface.

On B230F I install it dry. Works fine.
