idiot lights 900

My idiot lights don't come on until the auto is warmed up. Only the SRS, and seatbelt lights will light on a cold start. Does anyone else have this happen? It's not a problem, just wondering.

Tahnks

If it's not either of the two suggestions, I would say it's in the instrument cluster itself. I had a similar problem in my 1991 744 (essentially a 940) where a couple of the lights would come on (upshift and something else) when it was cold. Finally got sick of it, yanked the instrument cluster (surprisingly easy, check the FAQ), resoldered the whole thing and tightened the screws. Problem solved and it still works! I would try this after trying the other suggestions, as it is quite a bit of work. And rather scary.

My now departed 744T had a similar problem. When it was cold, there was a time delay between the time I turned the key to to time the idiot lights came on. I never could figure that one out. Then, after the smell of melting plastic from the relay/fuse tray, I removed that tray, the one under the radio, to find several discolored main wires and two semi-melted relay sockets. I replaced the wire ends, including the connector, and the relay sockets. The overheated main wires must have been the problem because it never happened again.

The relay tray will unclip on the left side and you can draw it towards you and flip it over to look underneath, if you are to do that though.

A lot of 700 and 900 cars have trouble with the ignition switch sticking - next time, give it a nudge counter clockwise after starting. The switch sometimes will not retract fully from the "START" position, and gives strange results.
Check that out, and if a little WD40 inside the key mechanism doesn't fix it, well, a new switch part (not the key part) is only about $40 from Volvo.
