Seats and carpet out, question on rest. 700

Yesterday it stopped raining long enough for me to start removing the wet carpet in my '88 745t. No room in the garage. So far I've removed the front seats, rear seat cushions, front footwell carpets, and console from the shifter back.

I'll need to get the insulation pulled which looks like a single piece crossing the trasmission tunnel under the center console. That's where I stopped as it started to rain again. LOTS of water in the driver's footwell and it's running back under the seat to the left passenger footwell.

It's apparant, on the driver's side that the air vent plug is leaking. How does this pop out? It's in tight but water can be felt along its lower edge. I want to pull it out and reseal. Also, does the sunroof drain show up in this area? I'll check the FAQ.

The rain started about the time I got stuck removing the front passenger kickpanel. I've removed the one obvious screw and can feel a clip or mount under the front edge near the firewall. I don't want to break it. How does it come off?

I'll be pulling the center console today or tomorrow and will use this time to also find out it an 850's SC 816(?) stereo can be made to fit in the existing stereo & cig lighter/tray opening.

Thanks,

Check the air intake under the windshield. The mastic cracks and leaks rather frequently. You may need to remove the vent grille to clean, check and repair.

I need to pull the cowling anyway. The glue holding the screen let go and the screen is laying in the bottom of the duct. I've used duct tape (no plastic) to cover over the vent but the water showed up on the floor anyway. So maybe it's not coming from the intake?

Thanks for the reply,

Could be. That stuff seems to crack and any water has a direct path to the inside.

Good luck,

You are wrong, the insulation is one piece on each side in the front, just like the actual carpet. In the rear, is it one piece like the carpet.

Thanks. I don't mind being wrong. Today it rained and froze so tomorrow I'll get back out there and continue. I still plan to pull the center console and check things out. I'll be putting the driver's seat back in for commuting to work this week.

Regards,

See the FAQ on the footwell vent. The sunroof drains are four tubes that extend down the A and C pillars to the bottom of the car. They can leak from the top down if the tubes come unhooked or (very unlikely) are cracked inside the pillars. I think your leak comes from the vent panels. Pop these out and replace the seals.
