Where exacxtly do I add transmission fluid? 200

I have a 1978 244 and It's my first Volvo. I've noticed that the tranny fluid is low but I honestly don't have a clue where to put the fluid in. Can anyone help me?

Where exacxtly do I add transmission fluid? 200

When I was younger It used to be a practical joke to tell "newbies" that the engine oil went in through the dipstick hole, but on an automatic trans. it really does....Honest, I usually keep a small funnel wraped in a clean rag stashed in a safe place under the hood. The rag keeps dirt out of the funnel and is handy when checking fluids.
Good Luck

If it's an automatic you add fluid through the dip stick tube(with a small funnel). Also check the fluid when the engine is at normal running temp, while the engine is idling. Before you check it shift the car thru all the gears slowly, then wait two minutes before checking.Wipe the dipstick off then reinsert it and pull it back out, that will give you an accurate reading.
If the fluid is brownish and smell burnt you should have it changed.
If it's a manual, you add fluid into the left side of the trans.A squirt bottle works good for this.

Where exacxtly do I add transmission fluid? 200

Hi

First of all drive around for 20-30 minutes in order to warm up the lubricant. This will allow it to flow out easier and residue is minimized. Mostly the same warm driving procedure like itīs common on engine oil change.

Lift the car and secure it properly. DO NOT work underneath the car with only the car jack supporting it!!!

When you look at the transmission box (my explanations refer to MANUAL transmissions without overdrive because I donīt know the exact procedure for overdrive equipped models). Given that your car is a ī78 I suppose that you have a transmission without overdrive.

On the driverīs side just few inches behind the clutch bellhousing you will see 2 screws attached to the transmission housing. The upper one is the check/fill plug and the lower one is the drain plug. Place somekind of drain pan under the drain plug.
Take a wrench and unscrew the drain plug. Be careful - the outflowing lubricant is hot - itīs better to wear some gloves for protection.

To be on the safe side of life it could be useful to have some spare drain and fill plugs if the old ones getting damaged during the job.

When the old lubricant is out clean up, reinstall and tighten securely the drain plug.
Fill in new lubricant trough the check/fill plug.

You can do this with a funnel from underneath the car or you could press a hose trough the fill plug and with a second person assisting fill slowly lubricant trough the hose. During re-filling stop sometimes and look how far the lubricant is raised. Normal level is very near or straight at the bottom of the check/fill plug hole. Use your little finger to check the lubricant level trough the check/fill plug. When normal level is reached reattach the check/fill plug and tighten it properly.

If you decide to replace differential lubricant as well the procedure is exactly the same as described above.
The drain and check/fill holes are placed on the diff bellhousing.

The drain plug is placed like the engine oil drain plug on the diff housing facing towards the street and the check/fill plug is placed on the diff housing just above the stabilizer bar.
Again, have some spare plugs in order to replace old, damaged ones and keep care about hot lubricant flowing out the diff.

Normal level for the diff lubricant is also very near or straight at the bottom of the check/fill plug.

Good luck, have fun with your car and have a nice day.

Lots of greetings -- Ciao M.P.
