Bosch Platinum Plugs and COLD weather Starting

My son installed a set of BOSCH Platinum plugs in his 1990 Celica GT last summer... and they worked well ...in warm weather. We are going through a horrendous cold snap here in Nova Scotia and he has been having a real problem with the car starting ..... really a blow to the ego when my 38 year old point and capacitor equipped Volvo 122 stumbles to life even at colder than -20 C and his Toyota absolutely refuses to start. So I called the local mechanic who used to maintain the car up until my son acquired it and his first question when I told him the symptoms was "What kind of plugs is he running in it ?" He had been seeing the hard and non starting across a spectrum of cars ALL of which were running BOSCH Platinums. So today we went out and picked up a set of Champions (no NGKs available) and even after installing only ONE plug ... due to the -36 C wind chill ... he hit the key and the car started right up after having earlier refused to start to go pick up the new plugs ... yup, you guessed it my old 122 came to the rescue and stumbled to life after sitting in the -20 C temps for over 24 hours .... I run NGKs by the way ....

Anyway ... if any of you are having cold weather starting problems .... you might want to check out what you are running for spark plugs and if it is BOSCH Platinums consider changing them.

If anyone else has run into this problem I would be interested to know ...

regards

Hmm, that's funny. I have used them in 3 Volvos and never had a cold start problem. Our weather here in Massacusetts isn't as cold as yours, though, but it's still cold here. The 3 cars I refer to are a '93 940T, '84 240T, and '84 240DL. The DL is dead now, but the other 2 have the regular Platinum plugs in them right now, and they are starting nicely. The plugs in both are probably about 1 1/2 years old.

Hey Greg .... if it works for you ... don't knock it .... just go with the flow ... All I know is what we are experiencing and the fact that others have had the same problem too .... mind you THIS winter has been BRUTAL !!!!

Yeah, I am just glad that the cars are working without problems at the moment! Right now we are getting hammered with snow, they are telling us around 18-24 inches of snow by the time it ends on Tuesday!

Next time around, I want to try some of the NGK plugs, just because so many people seem to like them.

A tech friend of mine who does mostly mercedes, bmw, and volvo when he has to says that he sees this problem each winter with platinum plugs in the winter. The platinums don't provide any performance increase. They're good for longevity on some cars.

I have a '93 940 wagon and put Bosch Platinum plus 4's in about 4,000 miles ago. Last week I started having starting problems. Right now we are experiencing a snow storm expected to dump 20-30" of snow in New Jersey but as soon as it stops I'll be removng them.
