960 PNP Switch Replacement Question 900 1998

I've got the front of the S90 up on ramps and was scoping out the PNP switch replacement situation before unbolting things and I have a question.

I have to drop the head pipe(s)/cat. conv. to get at the PNP switch. In looking at this, the two O2 sensors are attached to the front/back of the cat. I didn't see a clip anywhere that I can disconnect these two O2 sensors. The wires from the sensors go around the trans. and up into the engine compartment somewhere. I can't believe that these things have a 3-4 foot long pigtales.

There's got to be a way to diconnect them closer to the O2 Sensor.

Anyone done this before?

Thanks

Mr. Token Ring Man emailed me privately and asked me to help you.

Yes, the pigtails are long and the clips are released by squeezing with a needle nose plier from atop the trans pan lip.

I have other advice too if you need it.

Do NOT drop the exhaust to do this work. I KNOW the book says you have to.

Well I was just looking at mine too and came to the computer to ask some questions. I want to hear about how to do it too, but my main question is: if my only problem is intermittent back-up lights and wiggleing the shifter both sides of R does not bring them on when they are not working, and the car is starting fine, is the PNP definately the problem?

Most likely. That's what I had when mine started to fail (failed.) The car ran fine but I decided to replace PNP switch anyway before additional symptoms developed. PNP switch replacement has magically solved all of the above mentioned symtpoms once and for all. I suggest replacing this little monster!

Thanks for your prompt reply 38N118W (near Coaldale?).

It's awfully tight in there, especially not having much room to manuever only being on front ramps.

You obviously have a lot of experience so......What do you suggest? I'm all ears........... I've never done this before.

      Much Thanks,

I just know there is at least one write up by me, back in 98 or so. I have to get my two kids fed and bathed right now. I'll be around later tonight in case you don't find the reference. If it is lost in the archives then maybe we should talk on the phone. The task is 'easy' but the procedure is detailed. and I am kind of lazy to type it all up again anyway.

I've got the smaller 12mm bolt out of the switch/trans. and the larger 22mm nut off the shaft. I've also got the switch pulled all but about 3/8" off the trans. shaft.

I cannot get the switch the remaining 3/8" off because the trans. fluid line is in the way. The switch won't rotate clockwise far enough because it hits the trans case, and it can't rotate counterclockwise much at all because the pan sits proud of the case. The trans fluid line won't bend either. (If Volvo had moved that bend in the line just 1 inch further back.....it wouldn't be in the way).

What am I missing? What's your trick to getting this switch the remaining 3/8" off.

[Right now, I can't get the trans fluid line loose because there's no way to get a wrench to rotate; because the exhaust system is in the way. So do I have to drop the exhaust system to loosen the trans fluid line so I can get it out of the way.]

I'm so close, yet so far.
