Cigarette Lighter - Broke all sorts of stuff. 700 1989

Good day. My car is a 1989 760, Ericsson stamp on the fuse panel, fuse panel at the end of the dash. My girlfriend got me a portable air pump for my Volvo. I plugged it into the cigarette lighter, and ran it for 4 seconds... then the Cigarette Lighter voltage dropped and stayed dropped. I checked every fuse.

Unfortunately, it also disabled the power on to the climate control, and the heated seats. If I short the cigarette lighter tip to the yellow/black wire of the radio harness (Ignition signal line), then everything works fine as far as I can tell. When I do this, I can hear clicking from the seats. However, the radio works as expected with the key in any position.

Obviously there is an open circuit somewhere, but *WHERE*.

I've run out of points to meter for continuity.

I'm borrowing a toner (or foxhound) from work. I'mma connect it to the cigarette lighter, and start tracing the harnesses until I hear an endpoint. This is where a detailed wiring diagram would help greatly...

These cigarette lighter-powered devices are death on car electrical systems. They should be banned except for very small current draws. The absolute worst are the "start your car from the cigarette lighter" battery jumpers.

You maxed out the current draw without blowing the fuse and fried a connector or wire somewhere. Use a wiring diagram and trace everything on that circuit back to the fuse panel. Expect to find some burned wiring.

Yeah, really. I'm suprized the cigarette lighter isn't fused directly, or relay'd or something.

Start your car from your cigarette lighter? The (obviously American) manufacturers should be hung for that. I *know* my cigarette lighter shuts off when the car is off, and when the starter is engagued. I can see how they might even ground it, or have a low pull resistor.

Unfortunately, the 1989 760's electrical system is completely differant than the one documented (very well I might add) in my Haynes 82-88 7x0 manual. Next cheque, I'll be ordering the official wiring diagram, since I often need it.

Ever seen the new bulb failure warning system on 88- 760's and 960's? It's beautiful.
