Hitch receiver 900

I acquired a hitch from a local Volvo owner. It was a factory-installed model on a first generation (84-85?) 744T (bought on overseas delivery program). I can see that it will bolt on to my 945, the holes are all there. The bumper lower skirt may have to be removed to accomplish this.

My question is related to the size of the receiver. I'd like to buy a hitch mounted bike rack, but most of those require a 2" receiver. This receiver is rectangular, like 3 1/8" wide by 2" high. Does anyone know of a source for some sort of an adapter that will bring it to standard 2"?

Thanks
Doug

Had the same exact situation last summer with fitting the hitch with the rectangular receiver on a 960 wagon. I actually got the wrong Volvo hitch for my car (on eBay), but it still fit. A small part of the underside of the bumper was trimmed away and the fit is less obtrusive than most hitches. Before I had it installed, I took the hitch to a neighborhood welder and had him add plates to either side of the receiver to turn the rectangle into a 2 by 2 inch square receiver. Works great and the whole fix was $20 including a heavy duty insert. BTW, everyone I talked to recommended sticking with the original Volvo hitch unit over a Draw-Tite or U-Haul, etc. After seeing the fit and substance of the original equipment, I am sold on sticking with the Volvo hitch. I thought the welder was a better choice than other solutions, because now I can always use a standard 2 by 2 insert, whether for trailering or any kind of bike or platform carrier.

If I'm not mistaken, Draw-tite makes the Volvo hitch. At least that's what I recall from my '92 960 installation

You might try searching for "Draw-tite" (SP?). These folks make great hitches for Volvo's and every other car. They may have accessories such as the item you're looking for....

I ran into the same issue last year. I ended up buying a hitch mounted bike rack that is bolted to the receiver via the hitch ball. Here's a link to the one I bought:

The only thing about it I don't like is that I need to take it off the receiver when I want to tow my sailboat.

Hope this helps,
