Relocate flame trap above the intake - what kind of hose ? 200 1985

I want to move the flame trap above the intake for easier servicing . It look like a short length of 5/8" ID hose and copper nipple will do the trick . What specific kind (what do I ask for ) of hose is suitable (with respect to heat and oil resistance) . Where do I go to get it ? -thanks

That's on my 2 do list for my 1984 and 1984, too. My intended solution is this:

Use 1/2 inch copper pipe. Take an old nipple, the one that holds the flame trap and hoses, use it, with the cup cut off, to coupling the pipe to the nipple on the top of the breather box. The top of the pipe should be just above the intake runners. But, be ready to trim it as needed.

The newer style rubber cup will slip tightly onto the top end of the pipe. Put in the new flame trap, use the new style holder. You will need the new style larger hose, too.

Since I have not yet done this upgrade, there may be glitches unknown to me. But I hope this helps, with a minimum of confusion.

Bob

If you would go for a bit more expense, but less headache, check ipd (ipdusa.com). They have a set for doing just what you want already assembled and ready for you to install.

The 5/8 ID pvc hose is available at Napa or Car Quest. I got my 3 inch copper 5/8 OD nipple from a scrap pile at my friend's home construction site. You can buy it at plumbing supply stores. The PVC hose is pretty stiff which makes routing it a little more problematic. I used heater hose for the first installation because it's a K-Jet and there are a ton of hoses and lines under the manifold. I wanted all the flexibility I could get to figure it out, and I knew I'll be in there again soon to replace the wiring harness. Now that I've found a great way to route it to the front of the manifold without any sharp bends, I'll replacing it with the better PVC hose as soon as I find a good used wiring harness and do that job. Good luck. Be sure to test the breather box to make sure it's breathing. When you get the new hose, shove one end over the breather box nipple, and with the engine off, and preferably cool or cold, and the oil filler cap off, blow through the hose with your mouth. It should be easy to blow through the box. Your breath will come out the oil filler hole in the valve cover. The easier you can blow through, the easier your engine will vent crankcase pressure. If it's clogged, you should consider replacing it because the new flame trap lines won't do any good if the box is clogged. Let it breathe.

Great . The breather box ( oil separator ) seems to be ok . I have periodically sprayed carb cleaner down the nipple at previous flame trap cleanings then changed the oil and filter . Whit 226 k miles on the car, I would like to take it off and do major cleaning or replacement but don't care to r/r the intake for access since the breather doesn't seem to be clooged .

pvc/fuel/oil compatible hose. Not heater hose. The hose does tend to get cooked there, so it will harden, but it should survive. For best results use Volvo's insulated hose cover or slip a larger heater hose over it (heater hose is cheap and insulates well).
