brake booster blues 140-160

Ugh. Remind me again why I like old volvos. Please.

Yesterday I inspected my clutch cable -- the one I made out
of pieces of junk from a hardware store on the 4th of july
because I needed to drive to san francisco.

It was fraying in a couple places where I didn't clean up
the part of the loop I cut with a saw. Time to replace it
for reals... I figured "while I'm in there I may as well do
the brake booster as well.

Grr. I think the idiot intern who designed the pedal box
and clutch cable setup left and went to work at ford. It
was a nasty job.

Anyhow, the clutch feels lots better than it did before.

The brakes, on the other hand, are now really irritating.
There is a little squish at the start of the travel then
the brakes grab much faster than they did before. I did
not open up the brake system beyond bending the master
cylinder out of the way to facilitate the installation of
the new booster so I don't think I put air into the system.

The car idles smoother and sounds different but I really
don't like how grabby the new brakes feel. What did I do
wrong?
chris

I seem to remember having a similar problem in my 72 145... I got used to it after a while and never felt the need to fix it. I learned the problem wasn't improving but my braking technique WAS improving: Brake hard and let up quick to compensate for the uneven brake curve, etc.

I *had* theorized, however, that it had something to do with the first stage of the dual-circuit master cylinder leaking internally but the second in good shape. Perhaps the fluid was squishing past the plunger in the first chamber, but due to the nature of the design, fluid was firmly pressurized in the second, causing that delay.

    Any thoughts?

    Ben

Hmmm....sounds to me sorta like you got used to a bad booster, and now you've got brakes that work properly... The booster in teh 164 is much bigger than in a 140, and offers more boost.

I apologize for this sounding bad... but... Get used to it.

And...agreed on the piss poor design of the pedal box/clutch cable set up. That is such a huge pain in a 164. Stupid me though, when I did my clutch cable, I neglected to replace the bad booster, and had to get into it all again 2 weeks later. Arggg...

    Cheers,
    Matt

It took me a really long time to get this done. It didn't help
that it was at night and I only had my flashlight for light, but
      still.

I almost threw myself through the windscreen the first time I
hit the brakes -- and here I was worried that the brakes wouldn't
      work at all.

I don't mind the super-boosting brakes but there is something
fishy that there's a little play at first (along with a small
honking noise from the booster) and then *boom* strong brakes.

And here I was getting use to heel toe downshifting and now
I'll have to be much more dainty about driving that tank.

      Thanks,
      chrs

A delay/honking noise, then brakes? Indeed, that don't sound right... but I'm afraid I won't be much help with that one. Actually, it sorta sounds to me like your booster isn't right...

Mine was sorta similar (maybe identical) before I replaced it. If it was hot out, then all the time... When I first stepped on the brake, it would be as if there was no boost at all. Hence...push harder. THen it would catch, and my foot would be so hard on the pedal it would almost send me through the window.

Did you stick a used booster in?

You might also check that the one way valve is functioning properly...

        -Matt

I got the booster from RPR; it looks new.

I drove it around today, and other than the mixture and
timing being all screwed up the car felt lots better than
it did before. The brakes don't honk as much and I'm
getting use to the new booster. Things are also much more
linear instead of nothing .. nothing .. nothing .. boom!

Oh -- and I'm reminded why I like my old volvo. Wore
out as it is it is still a blast to drive in a way that
the modern hondas and VWs I've driven just aren't.

Is there anything adjustable between the pedal/booster and/or booster/master cylinder? I remember having read somewhere that the MC rod must be adjusted right to eliminate brake lock-up. I had my MC out some time ago but don't remember anything adjustable though. Maybe try a shim between the booster and the MC and see if that makes things better?

It will have to be vacuum tight.
The similar booster used on the 140s can be used on the 164 but
the actuating rod needs to be modified. Maybe he got the wrong one....
