Low beam failure 900

First, thanks to all who helped out with my broken lens question. This one's a bit harder...

My low beam headlights occasionally will go out on my '92 960. This doesn't affect the high beams, as they will always come on if the lows fail. This happens very infrequently, so not that big an issue yet. Still, it's scary when it does occur.

The dash and parking lights stay on when this happens, but the fog lights will also go out if I loose the lows. The problem will usually occur after I've had the high beams on, then flip to the lows. However, on two occasions, I've been driving along and the lows have just gone out when I may have had the highs on minutes before.

It's not a loose switch, since there's never any flickering. They always come back after flipping back and forth from high to low a few times.

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks.

Jay

    Low beam failure 900

Your lighting circuit is designed to turn off the fogs when using the high beams, so that part is correct. The hi-low beam relay could be the culprit. Not sure whether this is in the stalk or on the relay board...still waiiting for my CD-ROM manual from an eBay purchase ( over a week now)

      Low beam failure 900

Our 1992 940GL just developed this problem. Low beams do not work at all, but all other lights do. I was considering it to be the fault of the stalk mounted switch, but the relay is probably the culprit. Has anyone found a way to diagnose this to be sure? Or are you just replacing it and hoping that is the cure?
      TIA

    Low beam failure 900

I had a problem with the low beams on a 240...it turned out to be a sticking relay. This relay flips when you switch from high to low beams. When I would switch from high to low beams, the relay would stick and I found myself with no leadlights. Not sure if your 900 has the same setup. I never did replace the relay...it only happen a couple times on a very very cold night.
