Auto trans swap...is this possible? 200 1980

Sorry if this is a silly question...but I'm a newbie.

I have a 1980 240 diesel and I would like to swap it with a 1984 760 Turbo Diesel trans with over drive. The three speed screams on the highway, and is getting quite tired.

I have a really good deal I can get pull from a 84 760 donor Turbo Diesel...

Is this possible?

Thanks!

Dan

If I were changing the transmission, I would change it to a stick. No reason not to. Many reasons to do so.

I have a 1980 240 myself, and it is a manual. That transmission has been going strong for 209,000 miles now, and it's never given me a problem.

I wouldn't. The mating surface on the block is different between the diesel and the inline-4, so bolting it up to the block would give serious difficulty, not to mention the fact that I wouldn't be surprised at all if the stall rpm of the torque convertor is different between the gasoline and diesel versions. If the overall length of the tranny is different you'd also need to modify the driveshaft.

You're making life a lot easier for yourself if you start by grabbing one from another inline-4 engine instead.

Maybe I wasn't clear (which is very possible), but the trans I am getting from the 760 is mated to it's 6 cyl. inline Turbo Diesel...

The 240 is the "natrually" aspirited inline 6 cyl. diesel.

Given that the engines are the same type in both the 240 and the 760 (minus the turbo), is it possible to swap the overdrive automatic trans from the 760 Turbo Diesel 6 cyl. into the 240 Diesel 6 cyl. without too much trouble?

Thanks,

Dan

OK, I'm sorry. I read the "240" and forgot to read the "diesel". Yes, tranny-wise it should be a direct bolt-in fit. You might still have to modify the driveshaft or the shifter linkage due to slightly different dimensions of the 700 vs. the 200 series, but that shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Aside from the fact that the transmission from the diesel will be the "dreaded" ZF (so one should inspect it carefully before installing).. I thought that the turbo diesel to na diesel was like the ohc to ohv red blocks. The former are slanted, the latter are not.. meaning you'd have to use a bit of trickery to get everything to work.

... altho I've heard a lot of praise of the D24T + ZF4HP22 comobo.

That said, a manual transmision would be an easier swap, as that would be a direct swap... the 200 series diesel being offered with the M46 and all.

If your going from non OD automatic (probably bw-55/aw-55) to an OD auto (AW-70/AW-71) then I would think it would work. Just make sure you have access to the driveshaft, tranny support, etc. from the donor car. There will probably be a difference in length (but maybe not). Also, get the OD wiring and shifter, too. Maybe change front and rear seals while your at it.

Generally anything you can see that is not on your car already (that has to do with tranny of course).

Personally I prefer manual, myself (yee haw!)
