Gas mileage 140-160

I'm new to this board.I think the Volvo 164 is a great car.A classy ,comfortable European classic.A nice highway cruiser too. My spouse uses ours for a daily driver. My question is in regard to gas mileage. What is average city mileage. My 160 gets around 120 mi. on a tank full!!!!!!.....say filling up when you hit the red reserve. The car starts and runs good,is properly tuned up,injectors have been flushed, well maintained.I know this is a heavy car and is a six but still the mileage seems awfully poor! No leaks visible.Could it be a gauge problem. Is it possible that a sensor is malfunctioning or the cold start vale is stuck and pumping more fuel than I need. FI is not my strong point. Any advice most appreciated.

You can figure out if it's a gauge problem simply by seeing how much gas it takes to fill the supposedly empty tank. (Not that I have any idea how many gallons a 164 tank holds...)

As George pointed out, if it's a FI problem you'll see it by the color of the spark plugs.

Gas tank is 15.8 gal (60 liters)

About 145 miles/ tank in cold weather is normal. Even a 140 will seldom break 210, and not in cold weather.

That's shockingly poor economy... why is that? I can run both our B20 cars (122 and 1800) well over 200 miles on a 12-gallon tank in any conditions, even around town with all the electrical stuff running full time. On the highway they get around 30 MPG.

A 140 is only 100-200 pounds heavier, so why does it get less than 10 MPG? That can't be inherent.

Like George said, your guage may be hitting red before the tank is really that low. How many gallons is it burning in that 120 miles?

The 160's (and 140's for that matter) aren't known for real high mileage by today's standards.

10 gallons for the 120 miles approx. so looking at about 12 mpg! On the plus side when it's -35 Celcius here in Manitoba this car is warm and toasty.Best heater in a car I've ever run across. More than makes up for the extra gas. Anybody know who it was on this board who put the manual trans with OD in his 164 and what kind of city and highway mileage he got?

I put a manual OD trans in a '73 that previously was equipped with an automatic. On the highway, I was able to get around 18 mpg at best. Keep in mind, this measurement was taken with an inaccurate speedometer (could not find a speedo drive ration for the manual that would work with the 3.31 rear end) so the actual numbers might be a little off. I never checked the numbers for city driving, but 120 miles per tank seems about right from what I remember. The car was a real pain to drive in stop and go traffic, so I did not drive it much in town. Great highway car though.

It is certainly possible that a sensor is not reading right and giving
you a very rich mix, and/or that the cold start valve might be getting
power when it shouldn't, or leaking, or that your fuel pressure is too high,
or that your injectors are leaking. One thing to do is to pull some
plugs and see how black they are, and if all are black.
There is lots of good info on the FI system at
    http://www.icbm.org/erkson/ttt/engine/fuel_injection/d-jet.html

Year model might make a difference about the gas gauge but all of them
are subject to problems and will read high if the voltage regulator
for the gas gauge and temp gauge is not working right. Your clue will
be if the temp gauge always shows hot but the engine doesn't feel hot.

My 164 is a 69 with 281Kmiles. Have new clutch cable but have
    not installed it yet.
