Engine Wiring Harness - Have to go to mechanic for installation 200

The Brickboard wiring harness man is out of harnesses for my particular year. I don't have a lot of time, but will have to go to my local mechanic. He said he would have to charge $725.00. I called around and got prices ranging from 600.00 to 850.00. I called a mechanic that quoted me a price of 600.00, but he told me to give him my credit card over the phone so that he could purchase the harness. He must have been smoking crack! Another brickboard person offered to help me, but his location is too far. I may give the job to my local mechanic who is walking distance from my house. He wants 725.00.

I wouldn't shy away from doing it yourself if you're so inclined, especially if you have some help. Taking the manifold off seems intimidating at first, but it's really not that difficult. Then the harness is pretty accessible.

Do you really need to replace the whole harness? Or just the 4 wires going to the gray connector on the firewall? Those can easily be rerouted.

I think that's a really silly route to go. Maybe it's from driving turbos, but the firewall connector wires are bare on my car.. but many other wires such as those at the back of the alternator, those on the oil pressure sender, etc are bare. I think just re-covering (or replacing) the four wires is false economy.

Think outside the box. Do you have any electrician friends or someone who's done wiring?
