Fuel pump sounds like it's eating dirt! 700

Well, on top of all the other issues my car seems to have, the fuel pump makes a funny noise, and i KNOW the in-tank pump doesn't work, as for how long it hasn't, well, i've never known it to work... Anyway, my fuel pump sounds like it's eating dirt, and the idle varies with it, so when it makes the "dirt through pump" noise, the idle goes a little lower, then the noise stops, and the idle picks up again... goes like that continuously, changing randomly, no real pattern... anyone got any ideas? repco in australia want something like $480 aus for a new pump, volvo wants even more!

Hmmm, not sure about 1/2 tank or less, but it's there now!! I'm pretty sure i've had the same problems at completely full tank (i.e. after driving out of servo from filling up) and almost empty tank!

operating your car without the intank is a surefire way to kill your main pump with it because it has to overwork itself.

    replace both, that's about it.
