More Fuel Pump Questions 200 1990

I posted a few days ago regarding the in tank pump not working, while the main pump was making an electric razor type noise. I just put an amp-meter on the fuse block of the pre-prump (in tank) and the main pump (relay) and both showed up as 00.0 on my multimeter. I am sure it was on the amperage test. But both had abosultely no amperage. Is this possible and the car still be running?

I used the 10 amp maximum setting on my multi-meter to test both pumps on my 81. I hooked the leads to the two contacts where the main pump fuse goes. The main pump never registered any amps at all with the car running. What had happened is the main pump instantly blew the internal fuse of the multimeter. Eventually, I determined that the main pump was drawing over 10 amps because it blew the 10 amp fuse and the transfer pump was only drawing somewhere between .4 amps and 1 amp. I never determined what it all really means, other than that I need to get a real ammeter like one guy suggested. Any suggestions on where to buy a good meter and what brand?

      Doug,

That is exactly what was happening to me. I have been searching for a few days for a decent "multimeter". I came across what seemed to be decent. It is not great. It is not a "Fluke". But, it should do the trick. I will let you know how it turns out.

You realize that to take an amperage reading, you have to break the hot lead and run it though the meter, right?

      Bob,

Thanks for the resonse. I was trying to "save money" with a less than par multimeter. I just bought a decent one. I was blowing the internal fuse everytime I was touching any part of the car. Thanks for the help. I am a slow learner it seems :-)

The car will run without the prepump, at least to some degree or another depending on the circumstances. However, the vehicle needs the main pump to supply fuel to the injectors under a specified limit. Otherwise a correct spray pattern will not be achieved. The main pump will have a specific amp draw if it is working.

If you open the gas cap, you can hear the pre pump with the car running. The car will still run when the pre pump goes out.
