1994, 960 Wagon starting problem 900 1994

I just purchased this car from AL and had no problems driving to PA in super cold weather. Got home on Thursday and had no problems until this morning, parked in the garage (40 degrees) it would not start. Seems to have good battery and charge. Just no turn over or clicking sound. HELP TIA
Dave

Move the shift lever back and forth a lot. COntacts get dirty and this is one method of cleaning them. Also, check the FAQ.

Thanks for the help. It is the PNP switch. Wiggling the stick does allow the car to start. But now I need to either replace or adjust the the rod. Any advise on which to do? Thanks,
Dave

The switch is on the right side of the trans, secured with a big center nut on it's input/gear position shaft and a smaller (12 mm?) screw, oval hole. Removing the exhaust pipes isn't necessary but will provide far better access to the switch. Sometimes the switches are a bit tricky to slide off the corroded/dirty shaft end - careful cleaning is the solution.

Adjustment is possible after loosening the screw but you should note that the switches don't normally go out of position. If the switch doesn't appear to have been replaced or otherwise fiddled with, just replace it. From what other posters have written, I'd roughly calculate with a life span of 100k miles or less. A simple special tool or some skills with an ohmmeter is required to adjust the switch position properly. With the tool, I think it's about lining up the cast mark in the swith housing with the input shaft in a certain gear position. Not sure, have never used it myself.

Before replacing, make sure that the electric connectors (grey plastic block on the left side of the trans) are ok, clean and not oxidized. Connectors will be stuck and the plastic brittle - don't break anything.

This sure sounds like PNP switch failure. The switch, mounted on the transmission, is a weak design and simply won't supply power to the starter solenoid when worn out. Its purpose is to prevent starting in other positions than P or N. Try wiggling the stick when attempting to start and/or starting in N position. If this works, the switch needs to be replaced. It could also be misaligned if it was already replaced but not correctly installed.

Are your connections good? Battery, engine ground and starter? If there is not click, either there is no power getting to the start solenoid, or it's shot.

One other thing; check the fusible link. Not sure on 1994, but may be on drivers side inner fender wall just to the rear of the battery. Should have large red wires, is a flat device with plastic cover (mine is black cover on my 1991).
