How to quiet rattling,squeeking tailgate? 200 1993

I'm VERY proud of my 93 245,,dark green tan interior...wifemobile. BUT the tailgate squeeks like a flock of sparrows is following the car and it "clunks" on the right side whenever we go over a sharp bump.
What is the standard proceedure to adjust the rear tailgate?
Thanks,
el Raidman.

Unless you elect to play with the hinges, I've found that adjusting the center latch and striker plate to be the best way of snugging up the tailgate. You might also check the condition of the rubber seal around the 'gate; if memory serves me well you're in a warmer climate than I and heat deteriorates rubber faster then the New England climate (my '92 245 is still pretty snug). If the seal is in good shape, then spray some silicone on it periodically to help minimize squeaks.

I had the same problem with the tailgate on my '86 240. I adjusted the positions of the two rubber wedge-shaped bumpers on the lower inside edge of the tailgate.

Just solved my constant squeaking tailgate. TWO INCHES OF FRESH HOCKEY TAPE OR ELECTRICAL TAPE AS A TEST ON THE LATCH. The hinges are flexing so adjusting was difficult, as my door favoured the right side of the body frame. After wrapping a cloth around a wooden stick I gently closed the door with the stick on the right side. Better and almost perfect. I am wondering how to reconstitute the rubber seal around the back door or gate.

I once made perfect fitting door gaskets on an old Ford Bronco by laying a very generous bead of clear G.E. Silicone on the door. I put waxed paper on the other side. Slammed the door shut. Next day, perfect airtight gasket.
