I have an 87 245 gl with headlights that turn off when i take the key out of the ignition. I know my friend's 85 245 turbo, the headlights will stay on whether or not the key is in the ignition, like most cars. Was this a dealer option, and does anyone else have this on their car?

Actually, it's not an "option" - most if not all Swedish cars have this feature, although from what date I don't know. Swedish law apparently requires headlights to be ON whenver the car is on the road - regardless of time of day - and this is a convenience feature. FWIW my '80 Saab did the same thing.

I believe the "auto-off" feature started with the '86 redesign. Typically, I just leave it in the on position, since I leave for work before the sun rises and leave from work when it's setting.

-- Kane ... though I am used to not having such on the vintage ones. Otherwise, I'd be in trouble.

You are spot on. The switched headlights began in 1986 on the 240 200 1987

Nick: My '87 does the same thing. I believe that the good folks at the company made this change commencing with the '86 model year. Note however that the PARKING lights will stay on with the key out if the switch is set to that position when you shut it down.
