Temp Gauge and loose spring 200

Hi all

I am trying to get my temp gauge working on my 1988 240 DL sedan. I removed the instrument cluster and cleaned the connections on the comp board. On the engine block I tried grounding the wire connector to the temp sensor but I can't get the gauge to move. When I had the instrument cluster out a small spring fell out. Could this go to the temp gauge and be the reason it does not work? Any ideas? Can I put a temp gauge out of a salvage instrument cluster? If so does it require any soldering ?

Thanks Steve

Ok the temp gauge is working by cleaning the connections on the comp board...Anyone know what gauges in the cluster use springs? Speedo? odometer?

The only coil spring I can think of in the cluster is the one that is on the odometer reset button. Does your button come back out when you push on it?

You can easily replace the it with another from a salvage cluster. Just two nuts and it'll come off the board, no other connections. Watch out for the spacers and the washers though. Good luck and let us know how you fix it. Adam.
