Fuel Filter 700 1987

When I change my fuel filter are there any other parts I need to replace too?

Fuel Filter 700 1985

I am getting ready to change my filter too. I ordered one off the internet and since mine did not come with the seals I ordered them too. What I did not realize is that there are two copper seals on each end of the filter and each end is a different size.

The seals I ordered online have the correct inner diameter, but I went down to the Volvo dealer today and picked up new ones from them. Volvo's had a larger outer diameter and looked like better quality. My 2 cents worth. Mine is a 1985 but I think the filter is the same.

This job is a total PITA, perhaps one of the worst jobs on a volvo from a general maintenance perspective. First off most mechanics tighten the nuts with an air gun, so getting them to unscrew is a nightmare. Second, unless you have a lift to get access to the unit from a standing position it can be a horrible experience getting leverage on the unit without totally removing the filter/pump from the vehicle.

I would suggest you find an indy guy and just pay him to do it. The job shouldn't take more than a half hour or so, and the cost for the labor is more than worth the avoidance of the hastle.

good luck,
rt

p.s. the washers mentioned in the other post are the "crush washers" used all over your brick. you can get them at any volvo dealer.

rt, I've seen this sort of comment several times on the board about the difficulty of filter replacement. I avoided the job for years but finally decided to have a go last summer and found it quite easy. And my car hadn't had a filter change in 9 years (I know, I know.....) I find that with "floating" hose/pipe connections that if you use two spanners say about 30 degrees apart then if you squeeze the spanners together with one hand it usually works - well, it does for me. And this was under car ramps on the drive. Regards.
BillB.

The filter SHOULD come with new copper o-rings. That's it. You'll need to de- pressurize the system before opening that line. Run your car and remove the main fuel pump fuse and it should die shortly and your set.

After adding the fuse back in should I do anything else to get it back started?

Nope, it may crank for awhile. Some people squirt some fuel into a spare nipple 700 1987

like one of the carbon canister hoses going to the throttle body. Problem there is you might get a high speed/rapid idle that doesn't do the turbo any good but probably won't hurt it.
