engine degreasing repercussions 700 1986

After degreasing my b230f N/A it now has driveability issues:

Occasionally at a stop light (under load/in gear) the engine will act like it wants to die and then rev up (because it almost died). However, sometimes it does actually die.

Prior to this problem, it would run rough when I put my foot into the accelorator (like it was missing). I attributed that with gelled up fuel? That problem has went away so I'm assuming I was correct.

However, this current issue has not gone away. I'm not sure if this problem is directly related to the engine degreasing or not. It seems too cooincidental not to be connected, though.

To make a long story short...
The engine stalls sometimes at a stop and runs a bit rougher when in gear. The idle valve/motor has been cleaned once before (about 2yrs ago).

Could the engine degreasing caused a bad FI injection ground connection behind the distributor (i.e. it got wet and corroded)? Or, not related to the degreasing... could it be FI relay, fuel pump issue, or clogged fuel filter (it has been changed within the last 2 years).

Thanks for any input

Check the ground wires at the intake manifold. Look at the wire connected to the sensor in the head under the front intake runners. Any bare wires means rotten insulation. If so, I'm suprised you have driven this long. I replaced mine several years ago and after I opened the black covers, most of the wires were bare.

You can either re-wire it or get a brand new one. There is one wire which goes from the harness under the intake manifold, under the front of the engine to the oil pressure sensor. If you get a new harness, there are yellow bands to indicate the clamp positions.

In addition to Rob's comments, I recommend that everyone driving a pre-92 Volvo deoxidize and protect their engine electrical connectors when they disconnect a connector. Buy some "DeOxIt" spray, which removes electrical corrosion, and some silicone dielectric grease, and use these to keep things running. Your harness, though, may be on its last legs.

YOu could have a bad wiring harness. Any other signs of wire deterioration? There should be no bare wires showing. Degreasers are genreally harsh chemicals that will attack (already crumbling) insulation. Also just spraying all that water, especially the high pressure wash if you did that, will get water into connectors, and into the distributor cap, and dislodge loose connectors.
I would first check out the inside of the dist cap, see if there's ANY carbon or corrosion. Inspect the wiring to the bottom of the dist (hall sensor wire) and be careful, it's fragile. Then, you'll have to check whether the throttle plate is clean, and whether you've got any intake vacuum leaks.
Good luck!
