84 240 wiring harness 200

I was getting ready to replace the wiring harness on my 1984 240 when I noticed the replacement harness is slightly differnt from my orignial harness. On the original harness it appears that the coolant temp wire (blue wire) is spliced near where the harness connects to the plug on the fire wall. The splice goes down and is connected to the starter. Has anyone seen this before? Do you know why this was done? below is a picture of the splice.

Perhaps it was done to add an electric fan, making it thermostatically controlled? Does your car have anything odd like that, either an electric fan instead of the big waterpump driven fan, or a second pusher fan out in front of the radiator?
If not, maybe an accessory light or gauge someone "homemade"?
It shouldn't be in there, and maybe it was some kind of workaround that someone came up with due to other wiring harness problems. Hard to say without tracing out that wire. Your replacement should eliminate this rig- perhaps you'll find out that soemthing doesn't work then? Either way I would just replace and eliminate this "feature".
