SCCA Solo II 200 1978

I have a 78 242dl that I ran in a solo II event last year. I have IPD sway bars so they put me in STS. I nor my Volvo have any business in this class. I would like to know of anyone that runs a Volvo in solo II that can give me some pointers to making this basically stock 240 competitive and which class would be best suited for my car. This is not my daily driver so `I sould cosider making this a purpose built car as long as I can put it on the street some of the time. I know I could buy a Honda and be intantly faster but I really want to make this Volvo go.Thanks, Bill

Spend a lot of time with the rule book. If unlimited suspension mods are allowed, go for lowering springs, Bilstein shocks and a good strut brace. Of course, this assumes all the stock components like bushings and ball joints are up to snuff. An M-45 transmission is much lighter than an M-46 and Solo events should be run in first and second gear. Get the tallest stock rear end ratio you can get and add an lsd (Dana 30 is MUCH cheaper than Volvo part). Do what is allowed with the engine but major hp is very expensive.

You will always be at a weight disadvantage but work on smoothing out your driving and you will be surprised at how competative you can be.

We learned a lot of this through 4 years of campaigning a Group 2 242 in the SCCA ProRally series. We are still getting beat up by the VW GTI's and Ford Focus but will stay loyal. To demonstrate the value of good driving and rule book reseach, there is a driver in Southern California that has placed his highly modified 242 in the top 10 several times against AWD turbo cars. He's about the best RWD driver in the country and used the rule book to his maximum advantage. For example, sequential transmissions were not allowed in Open class but not banned in Group 2. Of copurse, the SCCA "Corrected" this oversight for 2003. Good luck.

It doesn't matter what class you are in. Just do it for the fun. I don't know what the STS stands for. As long as you don't do engine mods but you modify the suspension you would generally be in Street Prepared. I really don't have a lot of experience to tell you what class to run, though. Stock 240 models in my area run F Stock. I went to the autocross in our area a couple of times this past year. I'm going to run my 242t and they have already told me it's going to be in a GT class because of the engine mods. I really don't care because I'm doing this for fun. The GT class is a crazy lightened car with lots of mods which you would probably trailer there. Volvos in stock form do better than you would think. The one I watch in F stock competes again those Chevy S15 pickups with a V6 5spd. The Volvo outbrakes and outturns the truck but the truck is light and fast. In any case development of the driver is much more important than the classification, at least at the beginning.

However, if you want to build a car to a class, not only contact others with more experience. GET the rulebook! Join the SCCA. You get a discount on the fee for your autocross and you also get a lot more info from the magazine on what cars people run to win. I'm planning on getting out there with my car this year.
Wish you well, in this new year. Happy rolling!

Thanks for the info. the sts class is a street tire class that you can modify chassis parts but have to run "stock" tires (have to have a 200 tread wear rating or higher) I ran against neons and focuses and could not compete because of weight more than anything.

        Hi,
In that kind of situation you would have to buy the best tires possible and they would need to be shaved for the best grip. However, you would still probably do better with unshaved high performance tires. I only run 205 wide tires on my turbo but the tires I use are Bridgestone Potenza S-03 one of the top of the line performance tires. My car handles better than cars with much bigger tires because of how good the tires are. The treadwear on the Potenzas is 220 so the tire could qualify. The problem with a 240 is that there aren't a lot of 14 inch performance tires. However, if your 240 is a turbo then with the 15 inch size you would have a pretty wide selection. I'm sure you could be competitive with some careful prep. Each type of car has its good points and
bad. Or ask them to reclassify your car. Personally, I think most Volvos make good race cars. Because I like them. The thought of a Volvo 240 kicking Neon and Civic ass in an autocross is great! But the reality in racing is clear if you ever watched the Speed Channel Cup. Acura Integras beating BMW 3 series is a
pretty awesome accomplishment. Small, light, and powerful cars can be giant killers.

When I checked into running a 240 as an IT car in road racing I ran into the same kind of issues. Even comparing Volvos. The 142 models are lighter with bigger rotors on the front brakes than a 240. Plus the state of tune the engine is allowed is much higher for the 142 than a 240. And, the 142 uses 15 inch wheels. So in general I thought the rules for ITB favored the older car. Which made me not want to prep a 240 as an IT car. I'm not saying it isn't possible but it seems to be the way I read and understand the SCCA rulebook. If you are just going to do this for fun then the competitive edge doesn't have to matter as much. That is the approach I'm into. I'm going to autocross my 240T this year and I really don't care where they put me. As long as I have a fun time
and hopefully nothing breaks on my car. Happy rolling!
