rough idle on '90 740 gl 700 1990

i have a '90 740 gl wagon with 172k, and about 500 miles ago it began to idle roughly. It seems as if it is going to die, and then it givies itself too much throttle, bringing the idle rpm birifely upto about 1200rpm, versus the "normal" ~750rpm, then back down to 750rpm. It then continues to fluctuate like this until throttle is applied. i have checked all of the vacuum leaks, cleaned the distributor, and replaced the intake manifold gasket already. any suggestions?
thanks
dan

Have you checked for trouble codes? Like Steve said it really sounds like a classic case of dirty idle control motor and/or throttle body.

I presume you have also cleaned the throttle body. It sounds as thought the idle air control valve is not functioning correctly.

where is the idle air control valve? can it be cleaned or must it be replaced?

the IAC is just below the 1st intake manifold. It has 2 vacumn hoses and an electrical connection (optional). It is a murder to take of. I had to remove the intake manifold to unscrew it. But before you take it off, check you can buy one first. Mine cost about £70 in the UK. Good luck
