Socket sizes 200

Short version ; What's the correct socket size for the bolt on the crankshaft?

Ahh, a week of vacation and finally a chance to perform a post mortem on my B230F. Basically, what happened was the water pump blew, and that ended my commute very quickly. As soon as I found out that the gasket and possibly the whole head was KIA, I had the brick towed in my yard where it has been waiting for my care.

Anyways... Being the poorly equipped & frugal man that I am, I found myself staring at the bolt on the end of the crankshaft without a socket that's even close of being acceptable. So, before make the journey to Sears and fork out more $$$ for a socket that "possibly" fits... help me out here fellas, what's the correct size socket for that? I just want to turn the damn thing into TDC...

I was also going to ask for the correct size for the spark plugs. I saw many suggested that I should take one with me to the store. However, mine are tightly fastened on to the engine itself, so much for that. If anyone knows the right answer at this point, go ahead.. what was interesting about this whole affair, was what I found when I started to tinker with the rest of the engine. The heat shield around the exhaust manifold seemed like a good candidate and after softening the bolts up a little bit, the thing came loose. And what did I find from inside? A Volvo OEM sparkplug resting on top of the exhaust manifold... :-)

So, if anyone knows the right socket size, let me know, or I'll just go aheadn and crack open the valve cover and see if someone stashed the right part in there....

The B21/B23 use a 22mm head and the B230 uses a 24mm head for the crank. The spark plugs are... I believe they take a 13/16" socket. But why not take a replacement spark plug with you? NGK BPR6ES or Bosch equal.

That's a good suggestion, BUT, then I'd have to go and find the appropriate plug first.. problem solved anyways with the "spare parts cache" ;-)

Well where are you located anyways?

I've had my spark plug socket handy for the past few days (took another look and the thread is visibly deformed.. *SIGH*).. and would surely let a brickster borrow it or that 22mm socket I got to do the timing belt.

Brits/Ozzies/Canadians: What Spark Plug Socket is Used? 200

In the US, the spark plug socket used is, in our up-to-date system of measurements, a "13/16 inch". What is used in the metric world? 22mm?

I see... I just wasn't sure what kind to get, since I thought already that I had a spark plug socket - yes I did, 5/8 socket to be exact. And when it comes to SAE measurements, I have a terrible time trying to visualize them.

      Probably 21mm since 13/16" = 20.6375 mm

Art correctly points out it's a 24mm ---- also try a 15/16" (or is it 7/8"?) if you have an SAE socket set kicking around.

You can usually turn the engine by hand. Grab the belts each side of the pulley and give it a try.

At Sears, buy a standard spark plug socket. They have a foam insert for gripping the plug, a handy feature. On the Volvo engines, a swivel-head rachet works great for plugs, and a 3" extension is also helpful.

15/16" = 23.8125mm (for those with precision measuring equipment or swelled
      egos)
      7/8" = 22.225 mm

    It is 24mm 200

Good thing I grabbed the 24; I forgot about that size. The 27 I got for Christmas.

      Thank you Art!

I was trying to measure it and my best guess was 24 or 25, and when I saw your post I was thinking to myself "Oh boy.. he's gonna be standing there knee deep in snow with the wrong sockets".. LOL.. But we'll see what we can do with this tomorrow!-)

As for the "spare parts compartment".. I've found a ton of crap all over this car, e.g. there was a Bosch fuel filter package lodged behind the headlamp - nice to see that they at least used quality spare parts.

That was so funny I will take my 22 and 27 sockets out to the B230 car my wife drives - even put on my shoes and slug through the snow -- to get you the answer. I can't imagine who would suggest taking the spark plug in to find it fits a 13/16" socket without thinking you don't have a spare cached in the heat shield! Just what "laughing out loud" was abbreviated for!!!

Shame on anyone who posts the correct answer from true knowledge (smile).
