Valve spring compressor and shim pliers.

Are the valve spring compressor and shim pliers for use on a B230 specialty tools or can I go into AutoZone and buy their valve spring compressor and shim pliers? Actually I live down the road from Harbor Frieght, would they have these tools and would they be any good?

Or simply remove the camshaft, which allows you to clean out the oil feed and replace the little rubber dampers on the valve stems.

I've got the proper tools but can seldom be bothered to use them and tend to remove the cam. Measure all the clearances before you do so and write them down.

What tools are required to remove the cam, anything special? I'd like to replace the valve stem seals while I am in there.

Basically you just unbolt the bearing caps. If it's on a 7 or 900 series you also need to remove the distributor. The little dampers on the end of the valve stems are easy. If you want to to the stem seals you need to remove the valve springs. I've never tried it in situ on a B230 engine but it may be a bit of a giggle given how recessed they are. Anyone?

The compressor I used was the j hook type from ipd. I used a pick and pen magnet to get the shims out. The ipd rental for the shims and compressor is the best bet unless you have a volvo dealer down the street and don't mind making a jillion trips for the right shim. I found differences in the same size shims that cam with the ipd kit.

The spring compressor comes in two flavors: a small lever arm and a more complicated lift screw. The shim pliers are just a curved set of thin pliers that allow easy access to the shims. Autozone has none of these. The pliers and the lift screw device are probably not necessary, but the levering device is. IPD has this for about $30.
