Loss of Turbo... 700 1989

My Turbo has not been working well as of late. When in overdrive, once the turbo should kick in, acceleration stops. It will also not work in lower gears when going up hills. I was wondering if an exhaust hole would cause this. If not, could someone give me ideas? Thank you.

    Check your rod from the wastegate to the actuator unit on the turbo housing,sometimes the rod link comes out and the turbo unit can't build boost,also look at all of the plumbing from the turbo all the way to the intake manifold to see if one of the hoses blew off or is defective.
