Lurches when shifting

1990 240 sedan B230F, AW70L

When I stomp on the accelerator and the transmission shifts, the car will lurch towards the right side. It's not prominent during normal driving, just when I get a wild hair and want influence the Insurance premiums. When it lurches to the right side, the vehicle is not uncontrollable at all. It's just somewhat nerve-wracking when you are not expecting it. The lurching action occurs as it shifts through each gear and is a momentary occurance.

Any ideas as to what's going on, I don't have a LSD rear-end on this car.

It sounds like you might have really bad rear control arm bushings at the rear axle. Or one, anyway, which makes the axle torque up in one direction under power, and back in the other direction under braking or when you back off.

If they're that bad they should be easy to identify. I think you will see movement of the rear axle just going from reverse to drive. Stand by each rear wheel while someone shifts from R to D and see if there is fore-aft movement of either rear wheel.

The bushings aren't expensive but replacement of them is a bit of a pain. There's a picture of a homemade tool in the tech archives here if you're thinking of doing it yourself.

This is usually the main wear part in the back of the car and yes, it sure is disconcerting when she changes angles on you.

      Rob,

Did the TAB's about 1500 miles ago. Guess it's possible I didn't torque them in properly. I'll have to crawl back under there and take a look.

      Steve
