Wierd Cold Starting Problems 700 1987

I have a 760 turbo wagon.

Starting it in the morning is a strange procedure. She will start the first time - instantly. I have to feather the throttle and I can rev her but after about ten seconds she will die.

She will start straight up the second time but (usually) will again die.

She will start third time and I can usually keep her revving. If I can keep her revviing for about a minute she is fine and will idle on her own all day, but if I let the engine stall, she will not start again.

At this point she will not start. If I continuously crank her for about a minute and then only if I'm skillfull enough, I can catch the spluttering and rev the hell out of her but that is rare.

Any ideas before I tear into her. BTW, I have read the FAQ and many other experiences; I'm hoping someone else has this same problem and has fixed t.

Thanks
Dave.

You should not tear into anything until you diagnose the problem. Assuming plugs, wires cap rotor are in good condition, throttle body clean, right? After that first step when no start occurs is to know if you have spark or not. If yes you then want to know if fuel pumps are running.

Possibilties for the way you described the problem could be fuel pump relay, radio supression relay (needs to be resoldered), failing hall sensor or power stage. Before going anywhere else make sure you have spark and fuel. during the no start condition does the tach bumb up slightly while you are attempting to start?

Yes, the tach does bob up and down when I'm cranking it and the car tries to start but usually doesn't. Occasionally I'll 'catch it' and get the revs up.

I don't understand why it starts right up the first couple of times (it dies though) but will not the third.

Thanks for your help so far.

      Dave

Had similar problem on my 940T but for one day 2 months ago. Wish knew what it was. I would however consider a sticking idle control valve. Kind of a shot in the dark but good place to start.
