Why won't this fit a B18? 444-544

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1872239108

Man this would be a cool thing to have. Are the intake ports different for B18 or what?

    Bob;

    That would be fun to play with...but the intake ports are different from B16 to B18...I wonder if an OE alu B18 manifold may be adaptable?

    Cheers

      Maybe adaptable, but not easily... The B16 only has 2 intake ports, and 1 1/2" SUs, whereas we all know the B18 has 4 intakes, and 1 3/4 carbs.

      But...they did make 'em for the B18/20, and it may well be identical except for the intake.

      That said though, from what I heard those are good for about 2-3 pounds of boost. Not much in an engine that is already pretty hopped up from the factory. Those were much more useful on the silly british "sports cars" that had all of 40 or 50 horse from teh factory....

      ANd...although the one on ehay looks awful nice, its also pretty pricey.... Perhaps worth it as a novelty, but as a true performance upgrade....you'd do better with normally aspirated upgrades...

      Just my opinion... I've never worked with one of those...

      If you bought it you could probably dredge up a proper manifold somewhere. I was very curious about that thing too, but I've heard the style of compressor is uses suffers from wear, even when supplied with a steady diet of 'Marvel Mystery Oil'. I'd probably spend a couple of extra grand and get a kit from John Parker. That has a modern, long lasting blower and an intercooler. Of course, I don't know if he is actually shipping or not. But I think one would work quite well with a low compression 'F' head...

        Bob;

        I have to agree with Matt, John, and George...a neat looking, maybe even fun engineering exercise but with questionable longevity/reliabilty and performance gain...and not exactly cheap either...

        Cheers

        You might also want to change the pulley ratio as the displacement is about
        20% greater on the engine most folks use. Therefore a 2-3 psi boost
        on a B16 would maybe be about 0 boost on a B20.

          I ran mine on a 544 (lightest Volvo @ 2280lbs tested weight).

          I ran it at 18% overdriven, and got 5.5 psi.

          The case size (and thus per- revolution output) is greater on b18 type Judson.

          The blades are an issue. The original material was marginally function with leaded gas, & essentially non-functional with unleaded. George Folchi is *the* expert on these things, runs one on some British engine in a TVR, and rebuilds them. If he has one it shouldn't be much more than what the buy-it-now was. He has a new blade material.

          If you notice, the seller has one for a VW, and wants double the $ for it. They are "collectible".

          My engine was a b18 bored to +.020 b20, with stock head and exhaust, vv61 IPD Cam. It did go shockingly well and the low rpm throttle response was so nice. My stroker set up does the same thing, and gets double the fuel mileage. Surprisingly, detonation was never a major issue, even with mid 9's compression.
