Jet landing over my 240!! 200 1985

Cousins:

I've got an '85 240 w/105K miles on. Car is smooth and quiet, except that just a week ago, I started getting a sound that is just like a jetliner is landing overhead - kind of a whistle/moan. The noise is intermittant, of course... The pitch of the sound varies somewhat with vehicle speed. Could this be a center driveshaft bearing going bad? Any other ideas?

Curiously enough, another '86 245 started making the same noise about the same time - although not as bad or as constant as the other 240.

Usually it shows up in cooler weather.

The sound is like multiple whines all in horrible harmony (usually). it is likely the center support.

Most likely, those things really scream when they go bad. Try soaking the bearing with a spray-on lubricant and see if the noise goes away.
