I have just bought a 1996 960 and Everyone that I ask about the proper air pressure gives me a different amount. Can someone please tell me the optim amount...

The sticker on the door says something like 36 psi for max economy and horrible ride or 28 psi for smmoth ride and less economy. I use 32 psi. You choose.

The owner's manual calls for 28 psi (205 55R 16 tires). I keep the pressure between 28-30 psi. Ride quality suffers if it's over 30.

I run 35 psi in my 91 945 SE (960)
the car seats up to seven and usually has 3-5 occupants at any time.
I get even tire wear, fuel economy is OK for what it is. I've always
used 35 PSI, all cars. seems to work fine.

Everyone you've asked has given you different answers because there is no one optimum answer. What's right for you is right for you because of a whole set of variables. Everything from ambient temperature to what kind of loads you'll be carrying to what kind of tires you have to what kind of ride you're after. Incidentally the pressures listed in the manual and on the car are recommended for what Volvo thinks you'll be doing with the tires that came with the car, not what you may be doing with tires that may not have been fitted at the factory, and are sometimes a bad starting place (like in the case of the Explorer..).
