any tips for cleaning intake ports on head? 200 1979

Before i put injectors back in with new seals, I there any good ideas on ways to clean the the intake ports, any way to get any bits of crude that make their way down to the valves? I don't suppose there is any type of solvent the could be dumped in there is there? I also need to clean the intake manifold as well, I might take the advice that I heard on this board, and have them blasted with walnut shells or whatever they use.

thanks

-Bruce

Carb cleaner or brake cleaner ought to safely get out any carbon / oil/ varnish buildup. Of course, if a lot goes into the cylinders, it washes away the oil- which means the rings could score the cylinder walls a little on startup. A couple squirts of oil ( I like Marvel Mystery Oil) down the plug holes should prevent any damage post-cleaning, prior to starting.
If a great deal of any solvent or cleaner goes down the holes, an immediate oil change is probably in order.
I'm sure walnut shells and other organics used as sandblast media make for great removal of varnish and intake manifold deposits, but I'm not aware of Volvo's having any problems with these deposits (as Toyotas do, supposedly). My take on such treatments is that they're a great idea- for someone else's engine.
    Good luck!

thanks for the advice, the last two manifolds I've pulled off had pretty good carbon deposites on them. they didn't seem to want to dissolve very easy with carb cleaner. I plan on changing the oil right away after re-assembling everything.
