72 1800 ES Gas Tank Replacements? 1800 1972

I have a dented gas tank that has damaged the in tank gas pick up pipe. Does any one have any ideas about a "plastic" tank replacement, or repairing metal tanks? I've been told that only a tank from a 72 or 73 will work. Tried to reroute the fuel line, but that was a failure! thanks for your help. Jim

Mr. Silverman is at howie207@yahoo.com. I've been doing business with him for some time now and if he can help you he will.

Check out the "Gas Tank Renu" process. Do a search and you'll find them on the net. Local operations around the country. They'll take your tank, repair it, clean it, and coat it inside and out with a lifetime guarantee. Prices will vary around the country, but mine cost about $250.

Firstly, yes...the tank must be from a fuel injected 1800 I think. Not sure if the ES is different from the coupe though. You might be OK going back as far as '70. Not sure though.

My question is...how can you be sure that the pickup line inside is damaged? Seems like the tank would have to be awful bent for that to happen... Could the line be plugged with rust/sediment? Or do you suspect there to be a hole in the pipe inside? Just seems sorta unlikely situation to me. Not saying you ain't right...

The dent damaging the pickup seems entirely plausable to me. A friend had a similar thing and our bust guess was that the pickup was either broken or crimped up pretty high, as the engine would starve for fuel, even with a full tank. There was no sediment in the gas we drained out, either. We never did cut the old one open, but a replacement tank solved all worries.

BTW, Matt, I sent you an email, but our network is down at work. Who knows when you'll get it... Gotta love Q-west!

Many older and very experienced radiator repair shops also work on gas
tanks. Normally they will not remove the tank though.
