940 turbo trouble 900 1994

Hello, I have been having some intersesting trouble with my 940 turbo sedan and was interested to see if anyone else has had similiar problems. For some uknown reason my car's engine will cut off while im driving it, first i lose power and then all my warning lights come on. I still have electricity, the cd player works, windows, lights, evreything. If i wait a while, about 10 minutes i can drive it a little farther maybe about 2 miles or so, and then it will cut off again. If I let it sit overnight I can drive it for about 15 or 16 miles at 50 miles per hour before it cuts off again. I took it to autozone and had both the battery and the alternater checked, both were fine. So i now have little idea as to why it wont work. Any inshight would be appreciated, thanks.

I'd suggest checking at least the fuel pump relay and radio supression relay ( if the '94 got one ), It seems like the solderings ( inside the relay ) are lasting for 8-10 years.
However bad soldering symptoms aren´t very regular and tend to get worse pretty fast but could be worth checking anyway.

Replacing the rpm sensor corrected a problem with similar symptoms in a 1990 740 of ours.

I used to have a 405 that had high miles that used to do this...and it was the ignition module on that...used to eat one about every 50k...

very often used to cough once before it cut out...

My suggestion would be the ignition module.

Agreed...ignition module. 900 1994

It's normally øn the left hand side øf the engine compartment, near four injector ballast resistors that look like old time Silver Salute firecrackers, complete with fuses/wires coming out of them.

The module cost about $100 four years ago...figure 150 today...shop around.
It comes with a new aluminum heat sink...the heat sink is important because the new module comes with new dielectric grease or somesuch between the module and the heatsink.

I've since learned to watch the engine cleaner and water around the ignition module lest I wash out all the grease.....
