problems with my 760 turbo 700 1989

I am haveing some unusual problems with my volvo 76o turbo. It usually occures when i am just driving along doing nothing out of the ordinary. I'll just be driving when the tach will drop to zero and a few seconds later the engine will totally die. now this is in no way a life-threatening problem, but it does mean that i have to pull over to the side of the road and restart the car. If anyone has any suggestions about how i can fix the problem feel free to respond or email me at Trek_Lord@hotmail.com
thanx

Since the tach drops to zero, it indicates a problem with the ignition system. Inspect the Hall effect wiring connector on the bottom of the distributor. When the plasic in this electrical connector gets old and brittle, it breaks and the Hall effect connection is left hanging by the three little wires going to the sensor in the distributor. We had exactly the same problem six years ago in my wife's 1986 745T.

JS- I think the '89 would surely have the crank position sensor on the bellhousing instead. Same diagnosis, check sensor for fit or replace?

The North American Market 1989 model year is a split model year as far as fuel systems go. The 1989 model year is the last year for the LH 2.2 Jetronic fuel injection on the turbo 700 series. These 1989 turbo 700 series cars still have the Hall effect sensor. The 1989 NA cars use LH 2.4, and certainly do not use LH 2.2 Jetronic. I am not sure when Volvo started using Rex/Regina. but I don't think it was until after 1989.

I can confirm that the hall sensor on a 1989 760 turbo is indeed on the distributor and not on the bellhousing.

That seems odd to me since the 240 and 700 NA had gone to the 016 AMM and LH2.4 with OBD, by then. Certainly the B230FT had the position sensor in '90. But then I am deducing this from my observations. If you have an '89 760 turbo with the Hall effect sensor, that is hard to argue with.
