'83 245 often dies on first startup 200

not sure how big of a deal this is, but the 245gl i just purchased consistently dies after firing for a few seconds on it's first start up.... I really don't know where to start. I've got the Haynes, Bentley and Chilton manuels... any suggestions? my diagnostic tools are limited.

thanks

When it does finally start, does it idle at 1200 rpm or so? I have the same problem with my 84 DL, once it starts the idle will only hang at about 800rpm. It could be a chase to find out what is wrong but there are a number of suspects. Check all of the following: AMM, IAC, check for vacuum leaks including intake manifold gasket and injector seals, test water temp sensor for the computer. Keep in mind that these cars have a notoriously bad engine wiring harness which can cause all kinds of weird interimittent problems. Always go with the easiest first such as fuel filter/air filter. You might want to check the fuel pressure before and after the fuel pressure regulator, look up the specs in one of the manuals, insufficient pressure will definitely cause stalling.
Good luck, in-tank pump is next for me.

Mine does that too. I know I have an intake manifold leak for the first few minutes until it warms up. I'm a little too lazy right now to fix it. Only one Volvo in pieces at a time is my motto. I would like to know what it is though.

    How long does between starts?

Had the same problem, was a bad accumulator. But my car would start fine if it was parked for more than 4hrs.. Anything less would have problems starting.
