seat belts 444-544 1960

Hello -
Did the 544 come with seat belts? I just got one and it has some cheapo belts from a ford or something. If it did, where they the same ones that came on the 122s?

thanks
shane

OK, having read all the replies to date and remembering 544s when they were new, I went to my sales literature collection with the following results:

In 1958, the 444 was listed as having front seat belt attachments.
Later in 1958, when the 544 was introduced front and rear attachments were provided. This continued thru the 1963 model year where front and rear seat belt attachments were listed. My fading memory was that all 544s had 3 point seat belts, but that could have been made standard by US distributor.

Anyway the 1964 sales brochure is the first one that lists front seat belts as being provided.

The 544s came with seat belt mounting points which are SAE thread, but I don't remember which size. I installed a set of wrecking yard 122 seat belts in my 544 over thirty years ago.

My swedish market 61 544c came with factory lap/shoulder belts in front in grey with chrome buckle, no rear belts, I'm 99.9% sure it left the factory with them

Shoulder belts were usually (optionally??) installed in the front. The original ones are fairly crude but effective - thick heavy gray nylon with a friction adjuster on the floor mount and a 'carabiner' like latch that hooks on a simple metal loop between the seats.

120 series have shoulder belt mounts in the rear too, but 544's just have lap belt mounts.

That sounds like what I got in my 122s.

I'll have to search the junk yards for a good pair from a 122, I never see 544's at my local yards. I got my 122 belts from Pick-n-pull and they where in excellent condition (webbing, chrome etc).

thanks
shane

My 65 has three point belts in front and rear that appear to be all volvo. The fronts have the big hook and metal loop like the early 122's and 1800's. The rear belts have a big metal and plastic clasp that has Volvo stamps on each part. I can send you photos if it would help identify them. Look behind the headliner above the back seats for a mounting point.

Hmm. I wonder if they added that mount on the last year or two or if I just missed it. I looked pretty crefully on my '63 PV since I knew they were hidden like that on 122's. I couldn't find it on mine and used a center mount for the shoulder belts.

On further inspection of my PV (1960) It doesn't have the holes for the seatbelt next to the door (neither the top or the bottom next to the door) I don't know about the center mount location, some previous owner glued down carpet over the tunnel and I'm not ready to rip it up yet. Although I don't feel anything.

So I guess it didn't come with seat belts. The existing cheapo's bolt through the floor next to the seat. The holes are in a poor location (straight down below the hips, not behind the seat)

I think the 1964 544 was the first production vehicle with factory lap and shoulder belts. I have a 64 and the shoulder belt attachment is in the metal portion midway and in front of the rear side window. The seat belt attachment is straight down almost to the floor. The center attachment is on the tunnel behind the hand brake. There are no attachments for rear seatbelts.

My 544A built in 1960 has fixations for rear shoulder belts. The anchors are above the rear shelf. I found them by removing the headliner in this area. According to my books, all 544 have these possibilities for rear belts. The lower points are on the floor, but here any welding in the floor area may have "deleted" them. Michael

My '63 has shoulder mounts (and indeed original looking shoulder belts) in the front, as well as lap belt mounts in the rear (really just a set of 4 unused welded nuts along the gap between the rear seat back and bottom. I didn't find the rear shoulder belt mount on mine, despite a pretty good search for them (since I had found them hidden behind the headliner before on a '63 122 sedan I once owned). Instead of using the column mount I instead mounted the belts in a 'reversed' fashion - with the buckles to the outside of the car (on the outer lap belt mount), the end in the middle lap belt mount, and the inertial reel (from a 240 sedan) mounted in the middle of the parcel shelf, about 6 inches apart. It seems to work quite well there - the belt comes right over the inside shoulder and work well for me (6ft) and my kids (7 and 9 years old).
