which fuel pumps to buy? 200

I have a 83 242 Turbo and would like to replace both the main and intank fuel pumps. I've heard it best to buy a late model unit.. but not quite sure what they mean by late model... 740T? The car is CIS and I know that CIS runs almost twice the fuel pressure of EFI.. but id think the same amount of fuel... but I dunno enlighten me. Also, how hard is fuel pump replacement? I have a bently, but I have never done a fuel pump before, any tip/ tricks/ stuff to buy when i do it? TIA

I'm going to go against the grain here. I put a brand new A/C brand in tank pump from FCPGroton into my 82 245 turbo. It made the main fuel pump louder. I then put in a junkyard in tank pump, the main pump was quieter but still intermittently noisy. Put in an in tank pump from a 700 series B23 turbo, problem solved. I called the guys at IPD about this and they said they've heard of a number of cases where brand new in tank pumps were not keeping the pressure at the backside of the main pump at the required 3 psi in K jet systems.

Perhaps my story is the exception but I was into the gas tank no less than five times before I got the problem solved. Be advised, If you put in the larger B23FT pump, you have to cut the down tube 1/4" or so, use hose clamps on the rubber connector tube and also need to rig up some sort of mounting system to tie the larger fuel pump to the mounting bracket. (I used large hose clamps)

You're not going against the grain at all....in fact lots of folks have the mod, and I mentioned it...my only caveat, was that since it's his first: keep it simple.

The solid delivery of fuel with the later turbo pumps is a big plus.

Don't futz with the main pump. Buy the OEM pump (Bosch) period. You won't gain anything there....

But you can get a better delivery in-tank pump - and this is maybe the tree you are trying to bark up. Yes get a late 740/940 turbo in tank pump - but it will need to be adapted - on second thought, this is your first fuel pump? Stick with stock.

A higher volume intank pump will keep your main pump in the fuel and yes it makes a difference - we are not talking increased presure - we are just talking more consistant fuel delivery.

Buy the correct pump for your year and model. The pressure is critical in the CIS system. The volume may be the same but flow is regulated in the CIS by pressure.

BTW, your replacement is a preventive step, right? I guess from your question that you are not trying to fix a problem but rather put new pumps in for long term reliability.

which fuel pumps to buy? 200 1983

Well both really... I've been bringing the car back from the dead after it wasn't taken care of by previous owner, and then sat for 3 months. So after I got everything together (changed thermostat, fuel lines, injectors, vac lines, the car will start (slowly) and run at idle, but the pump groans like a banchy and the main fuel fuse is burning hot. The car has no power and is hard to rev off idle above 4000rpms without switching on (its on a switch) the cold start injector.. the tank has about 2.5 gallons in it, but i cant really put more because I cant drive it anywhere and havent had time to take several trips to fill a gas can. So anyway... the car has 250k+ miles on it.. i think (odo says 47..) So anyway....even in the main is working, im trying to make it a reliable grocery getter w/ some kick ( just a little). Do you need to remove the fuel tank to get at the intank pump? do i need to buy hoses or clamps or anything else.. Thanks for all the responses so far.

One other thing to remember is to replace the hose that attaches to the intank pump, inside the tank (ie not the hose that goes from the tank to the main pump, but the one that goes from the intank pump to the fitting at the top of the tank). This hose is a notorious source of trouble, inasmuch as it cracks and you then end up with a starving main pump.
