degree of difficulty in replacing PNP swith and tranny mounts 900 1995

I need to replace my PNP switch (I have been getting periodic flashing "W", "E" and arrow on dash. How difficult is the replacement, do I need any special tools, and where is the PNP. Same with the tranny mounts.

Thanks.

I can confirm that it is possible to get your symptoms (and no others) from even dirty PNP switch contacts.

The dealer suggested that I cycle my shifter back and forth a bunch of times (I did it with the engine off) to clean the contacts. It worked! Someone else related this "fix" a few days ago as well.

New PNP switches can be had for about $95. From posts it can be changed without disturbing any components.

There are others that know this better than I, but are you certain it is the PNP swtich? WIth those symptoms, I would suspect the mode switch. When a PNP switch begins to fail, I think that the usual sympton is 'no start' with nothing turning over, but dash lights on. I admit it is a strange beast, so nothing would seem unusual to me.

Mine failed this over a period of months, but I could always restart it after a short time. Another telltale sign that I recently learned here is that you will loose your backuplights, which I did.

At the first replacement, the mode switch was also changed out, and I had the characteristic mode flashing.

I can confirm that 'no start' is not a required symptom of failing PNP switch. In my case (last winter) E-S-W at the shifter started to flash and the arrow on the dash came on. Then I noticed that that my backup light were not working when I put the tranny in reverse. Finally, I got Check Engine light which pointed to the (famous) PNP switch. However, I never had 'no start' issue even during the above described symptomps: my car was running perfectly fine (if you can say so about the car w/o reverse lights) until I decided to drop it at a local Volvo shop a few days later. I did not have any performance related issues during that time.

alckc, the point of my story is that it IS probably PNP switch, as you correctly noticed. Almost everybody on this board had at least one failed PNP switch. Just change it. Should be $250+ at independent Volvo shop. Less than $200 if you decide to do it yourself

That's an amazing switch to display all those varied symptoms. I'd like to see it's wiring diagrams! Thanks.

Just a final thought...
I pulled mine, a bit tight by exhaust, took it apart, cleaned it, lubed it with Bosch point grease and put it back. No problems in 40k+ miles. Cost: two hours fairly simple work.

Mine dropped into "limp home" mode and set the lights, WES and trans arrow, flashing. Wouldn't activate starter. It also set a code (411, 141 or something like that).
