Can I use this OD relay in my car? 200 1983

Hi,

While rummaging around the pick-n-pull a few days ago, I found a white OD relay and i grabbed it, since the current one my car only works in hot weather. (i've already resoldered it, but obviously didn't do a great job). Since the two relays are different colors, I am not sure whether they are both usable in the '83 245. I don't know if the OEM relay for my car was white or orange, since the orange one in there is a replacement installed by the prior owner.

They are both 5-prong relays and both are for automatic transmission cars. My question, Is it OK to use the white relay in my car? They both have printed on them:

12V
5DA

but the serial numbers are different.

Any information on this is helpful. I don't want to put the white one in and start blowing fuses or anything else.

thanks,

susan.

    Susan,

You did exactly what I did about 6 months ago. I tried the white one in my car to see if it would work. To make a long story short, it did work, but it illuminated the OD off indicator light when it turned the OD on. That is the only difference I could find because other than that it worked.

For the long term I found another orange one and put it in.

    Good Luck!

Last week I bought a '90 244 with a bad relay, and have dug through all the archives on this issue (with great success, I might add) but here's the overview I've picked up (since this is the first (out of about 10 Volvo's) time I've had an OD relay be bad...

They're specific. That is, if your car originally had the orange one, that's the one you need. Likewise, if it had the white one, you need to replace it with the same color.

I'm going to U-Pull-It tomorrow and try to find a white one.

I hope this helps; it's more acquired wisdom than that of my own experience.
