1982 242 Turbo Info 200

Hi,

I am needing to replace my turbo and am seeking the help of you experts as to exactly what I need.

Also, I'll probably try to find a good used one so any suggestions where to look.

Is this turbo oil or water cooled, etc.

Thanks,
M Karns

Go with a water cooled, even if yours isn't...(I like to think of the oil cooled ones as only "air cooled"...)

See my wesite anyhow.

I don't have a source other than shop around....used you can at least see the free play.

If you break a stud and can't get after it with a left hand cobalt bit, diamand bit, etc Then I say to go ahead and pop the head.

How is your wireharness?

if it's original, it's oil cooled. highly recommended to switch.

i did this job with only minor experience and was successful - thanks to Brickboard and specifically, Paul Seminara. biggest tips i can offer are:

1) get a NEW oil delivery pipe
2) loosen psgr side motor mount and jack up engine slightly to both remove and install the turbo more easily
3) spray ex manifold bolts with PB BLASTER for at least few days b4 attempting to loosen them. breaking them is not cool.
4) don't let your timing belt break 9K after doing the work and drive a little ways and burn out your newly installed turbo. ask me why.

possibly gotcha is catalytic converter. if your turbo has been leaking oil into it, it might need replacing to.

i got my turbo used from Brian Leppin. he's at usedvolvoparts.com. call him though - he doesn't answer his email.

you don't remember when this happened? i put it up here, i'm pretty sure.

i was driving home from an office xmas party. it was late and cold and i had a couple of white russians in me. driving up a hill, i felt a loss of power. kept on driving. loss of power still there. kept on driving. maybe a minute or so after first loss of power, pulled over. car died. looked under hood, turbo glowing orange in the night. run away! run away!

had car towed to my house. couldn't start it again. had it towed to my friend the mechanic's house where a parts car turbo lived. he discovered that my belt had slipped - must've been driving with timing advanced or retarded ? for that minute or so - and that once he replaced timing belt and was able to start car - turbo was dead. still don't know why exactly this happened.

anywho - he replaced my replacement with his parts car's used turbo. going strong ever since, but definitely burned my original savings on the original replacement.

Sorry yes I do remember. Still seems weird that a broken timing belt wasted the turbo.......

it does seem weird. but, if you saw the color orange it was glowing, you might think it was less weird. i swear it looked molten.
