1980 244 DL Violent shaking on first start of the day.

Hi all,
Had a weird one this morning with my car. Started it up, drove to the end of my block, and it was running very rough, and violently shaking, I thought I was on a bucking bronco or something. Once I went through the gears down the road it smoothed out some, but still a rough idle. I just replaced all 3 mounts, so I don't know why its shaking so bad. Any ideas?
Also I got a new master cylinder from FCPGroton, it has to be bench bled? You just put the tubes in the resevoir? then just the lines or the whole system?
Thanks as always.

Hello, Chuck,

I am recalling a Don Foster post from a long time ago about bleeding a new master cylinder.

Seems to me he fashioned a couple of short pieces from discarded brake lines with good fittings on one end. Attatched the fittings to the MS, then passed fluid out the outlets and back into the resevoirs. this passed out the air until the system is passing only fluid.

Can't recall how he kept the fluid in the thing as it was then installed into the car and connected to the brake system.

Probably some air gets into the brake lines at that stage, since thay are sitting open at their MS fittings until installing the new one.

This comes from parking the car in your swimming pool overnight. (Chuck, you really do need to start going straight home after work and quit stopping off at those neighborhood establishments.....)

Hi Zee,
Yep, guess that's why the seats were wet.... :) but anyway. I figure the whole system will need to be bled, guess I should breakdown and buy an EZbleeder. When you have an hour or so I'll tell you about my vacation nightmare. Thanks for the reply.

Usually that bucking bronco feeling is produced by a 4-cylinder engine running on three. Sometimes it will clear as the engine warms up, sometimes not.

Check the ignition cables. In the pitch dark, engine running, no lights at all, look under the hood at the cables for blue glows or sparks indicating power leaks. Look at the distributor cap, too.

Dirt with moisture is sometimes the cuplrit, the 40,000 volt iginition voltage likes to jump out before the spark plug - very visible.

Good Luck,

Bob

Bob,
Thanks, I'll do the night time check and see. The wires and cap and rotor are all under 6 months old, I guess a dead injector could do it to? I have to pull them to do the seals anyway, just have to get some time....Its really crazy.
Thanks again..
