fuel injection problem? 200

Hi all,

I have a 1987 Volvo 240 GL in pristine condition :-)

I noticed in recent weeks that when I turn the ignition key, the engine starts, but it sounds weak and then the whole motor and car shakes and the engine dies. It works fine on second attempt.

This used to happen very occasionally, so I thought that maybe I didn't hold the key for long enough for the engine to start correctly. But this appears not to be the case now because this scenario of engine attempting to start and then dying a few seconds later is becoming an almost daily feature?

Friend of mine reckons it might be a fuel injection problem. Spark plugs have been changed just a few weeks ago so it can't be that.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Danielle.

In the fuel system, back near the main pump, is a check valve. It is there to retain fuel pressure between operating cycles. If it takes longer to get started, then maybe the check valve is failing and fuel pressure must be built up in order to run.

See if revving up to 1500 rpm or so right after starting makes a difference.

Oops, all my 240's have a tach, and maybe yours does not. Anyway, rev it up just a little, as the oil won't be well distributed early on.

    Good Luck,

    Bob

    Oh my!
This could be so many things, do you have any other symptoms?
How many Miles? Dou you have a workshop manual? General maintenance record?

I would clean the throttle body, IAC valve, check throttle position switch, look for vac leaks and check the general health of the electrical connections, grounds, fuses, relays. All easy and cheap stuff if you read the 700 FAQ. Always a good place to start.

If you do not know what a flame trap is find out.

    Good Luck
    Karl
