960 runs a little rough for first 4 miles then great - why??? 900 1995

My '95 965 with 93K runs a little rough for the first 4 miles or so, then it runs great. It feels like one of the cylinders is not firing correctly, but not as bad as not firing at all. The temp gauge reaches the middle position within the first 1/2 mile or so. I have cleaned the throttle body and replaced: plugs, O2 sensor, air filter, fuel filter, and trans fluid. Currently, I am using Castol 10W-30 dyno oil, but am going to try Mobil 1. I got the car only ~4K ago, and it has had this problem ever since.

My gas mileage is only 15mpg in the city and 22.5mpg on the highway. This seems pretty bad to me. I use 87octane, but the 93octane gave me only 15.5mpg and 23mpg. I was expecting at least 17mpg in the city and 25 on the highway. What do you get?

Thanks
-Steve in NC

Have you looked at all your plugs for their condition? You might have a bad coil or a stuck valve. Run a compression check when cold, and the when hot. You may need an Abe Crombie tune up.

You did change the timing belt at 70K miles didn't you?

All plugs new, coils look OK. Did the Abe Crombie tune up. Timing belt changed at 70K. I don't have a compression tester. My mechanic said that if it has bad compression, the computer would give a code. Is this true?

Thanks,
Steve

I don't think the computer would show codes for low compression, at least on my 94 it didn't. The computer adapts to engine wear and unless the wear was so bad it could not adjust enough you would not get a code.

How about the vent door for the intake, the foil tube under the MAF, is the door working correctly, drawing air from over the exhaust manifold until warm?

I'm just thinking, are your fuel pumps working correctly? My 94 has two not sure about the 95's and will run with one but not well. It may still be sticking valves.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, Dan.

How do I check the vent door operation? I haven't found it in the FAQ but I am not a great looker.

I'm glad to hear that your 960 made it to 200K. I hope that I am headed there!

I have never tried this but I would when the engine is cold, undo the foil tube at the air filter, start the engine, then carefully with my hand feel for air being drawn in where the tube was connected.

I am sure somebody has done this and will have a better idea.

This only works when it's cold outside. I think the temp. has to be below 60 degrees F. at least.

I don't know, other that a bad O2 sensor reading. I'm going to have to get an OBD-II code converter and software. You might want to check your injector grounds, See a later message on 960 problems.

Maybe the intake gasket, small vaccum leak then when engine warms up metals get closer, just an idea.

You may be right. The bolts for the intake were lose. I tightened all that I could reach without taking the whole thing apart. I think that it drives a little better now during the first 3-4 miles, but still not nearly as smoothly as after mile 4. Oh, well. My wife is probably right when she says that I have better things to occupy my thoughts...

Your city mileage is really low. Mine is usually up around 17-18. You highway mileage is still pretty low, but you'll realistically only get about 24mpg on the highway unless you are good about keeping your foot out of it. I've gotten up to 26mpg but, generally 24. Have you checked the codes? There's instructions in the FAQ for pulling the codes. Luckily, your car still has OBDI. Some possible trouble areas could be engine temp. sensor, FPR, sticking valves. Pull the codes and report back...

There are no trouble codes stored in the OBDI. (only 111) In the past I have gotten the O2 sensor code 212. I replaced the O2 sensor and cleaned the grounds on the engine near the fuel rail. Since then, I haven't gotten the 212 code.

One thing that may be related: A little oil leaked from the filler cap and found its way down into coil #3. Plug #3 was badly corroded. When I replaced the plugs, I cleaned the spring on the coil with emory paper. I have since replaced the oil seal in the filler cap. Oil also got into the fuel injector connector (#3). I noticed this when I replaced the leaking fuel rail last weekend.

The car passed the emissions test, but the HC level was 210ppm (I think that I have the units correct -ppm). Is this level OK? It seems high to me.

The rough running manifests itself mostly as exhaust noise, although I can feel it in the gas pedal. My wife doesn't notice anything, so it is not that dramatic.

Thanks,
Steve in NC
