Blew the top gasket, eh? Why did it blow? Poor initial installation? Deterioration due to oil leaking on it from a leaky camshaft seal?

Put a few drops of ATF on the ends of that upper gasket. The ATF won't damage rubber, it will be enough to help the gasket seat well, and it's handy to get from the P/S dipstick.

    Good Luck,

    Bob

I also smear a light coat of grease on top of the new seal, that's all it needs.
You'll notice that one of the top water pump bolt holes is slotted. Loosely install all the bolts and slightly tighten the top unslotted bolt. At this point you can pull up on the pump while you tighten the slotted bolt. This will compress the rubber seal while the grease allows it to seat into proper position.

I'd get either a new pump (unless yours is within 50,000 miles) or at very least a complete gasket kit. Breaking the little seal on the heater pipe is likely when you take out the pump--better safe than sorry.

Lately, I've been greasing the water pump gaskets instead of using any RTV. The grease does two things: It lets the water pump slide when you lever it up against the head seal, and it also keeps the gasket from plastering itself to the head when you have to do another water pump change.
