Starting trouble...fuel delivery issues? 900 1993

Hey

Lately my 945 has a hard time starting (engine turns over a lot, doesn't get started until you goose the pedal a little).

I thought maybe it's the check valve, so would turn the engine over in little two or three second bursts several times, and then crank engine normally; no go. Have to crank it for at least five seconds.

When it gets started, it hesitates a little coming out of stop for the first minute or so. Then it's fine, runs fine, no trouble, and restarts very easily...*unless* the car sits for several hours. Then it's back to square one.

I am *not* hearing the "two second buzz" when the key is turned to ON, like I used to. Fuel pump fuses are A-OK.

All the various posts and FAQs have me a bit overwhelmed and confused (what else is new?) about where to start with troubleshooting. Relays! In-tank pump! Main pump! Aughh! Suggestions welcome! I have a road trip in 10 days and do not wish to be stranded in the boonies.

Thanks

--Greg

Before you do any ordering check for corroded electrical connector at the fuel pump itself (if the car has underbody pump).

Amarin.

I believe in looking at cheap and obvious fixes first so see if you have power at the pumps (you can access the in tank pump wiring through the hatch in the trunk area). If you have power, you can probably rule out the relay, conversly, you may have found your problem. Next would be to check your pump pressures and fuel flow which should pinpoint which pump is to blame. I'm not sure if the FPR could cause your problem but it is known to fail (jump in here anyone, could a faulty FPR let the latent pressure bleed off and allow the fuel to drain back to the tank, just guessing at this point)? Look to the obvious first, your lack of a FP whine tells me you are pointed in the right direction with the FP/FP power.

Thanks Bob. The Board is a little quiet on this one!! (Everyone's out having summer fun, I hope.)

Thanks for confirming my general course of action. Tonight I am going to go in and test for power, and operation of the relay. There is a decent troubleshoot on the relays in the FAQ so I'll start there. Hadn't thought about going straight to the in-tank pump to check for power there.
