brakes squeal 700 1991

I have a 1991 Volvo 740 station wagon. About 3 months ago I had a mechanic replace the discs and pads. Ever since the brakes always squeal (moderately) at a certain braking speed. I have read about how to resolve this problem on this website, but I want to know if it is dangerous to have squeaky brakes ie - is it a sign that something is wrong? The brakes work very well, so I do not want to alter them unless it is necessary, having no experience in working with brakes. Also is there such a thing as a wearing in period or should the brakes never make any sound?

Ben

I had the same quealing problem with my 88 740T using Volvo pads - Drove me nuts and embarrassing. Changed the front pabs to PBR Deluxe and problem solved ever since (30K and still no problems). Also eliminated my dust problems.

Third in a line of distinguished contributors...

I say the same thing. If it doesn't bother you, then don't bother changing anything as long as it stops well.

"Bricks" are known for having squeaky brakes due to
idiotic design. I don't understand why they never
bothered to change it. Fortunately, functionally brakes
are fine. There are things one could do to temporarily
suppress the noise. Not for long though.
    Still squeaking since 1986...

Usually squeaking is just the result of dirt and isn't something to worry about. If you want to make sure, you can pop the wheels off the front and visually inspect the pads, and also make sure your caliper guide pins are not seized up. If the pads are fine, the springs aren't broken, the caliper pins move, and all you have is squeaking, then I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. :-)
